A hand-carved marble vessel sink usually weighs 60–110 lb (27–50 kg). A vanity-top or wall-mounted basin with an integrated backsplash lands between roughly 280 and 420 lb (127–190 kg). Those numbers come from stone density, not guesswork: ASTM C503, the standard specification for marble dimension stone, sets a minimum density of 162 lb/ft³ (2,595 kg/m³) for calcite marble and 175 lb/ft³ (2,800 kg/m³) for dolomitic marble. Multiply the carved volume by that figure and you have your answer before the crate ever arrives.
Whether your vanity will hold it is a separate question — and usually the one that matters. Below are the real weights by basin type, the load figures the cabinet industry actually tests to, and the support details we specify on every wall-mount order.
What a stone basin actually weighs
Weight is volume × density. A carved basin is a solid block minus the bowl cavity, so a deep bowl removes real mass. Working from the ASTM C503 calcite minimum of 162 lb/ft³ and the Natural Stone Institute's published travertine range of 140–165 lb/ft³ (ASTM C97), here is what typical pieces come out to:

Two corrections people forget. First, water: a 22" × 13" bowl filled to 4.5" holds about 5.6 US gallons, roughly 46 lb (21 kg) of live load on top of the dry weight. Second, a person leaning on the rim — designers should assume an occupant load, not just the fixture. Both belong in your support calculation.
Travertine is the lighter option, and honestly so: it is a chemical sedimentary rock with a porous structure, which is exactly why its density band sits below marble's. That same porosity is why the Natural Stone Institute lists travertine absorption at 0.10–2.5% by weight against ASTM C503's 0.20% maximum for marble. Lighter, but thirstier.
What your vanity is actually rated for
Here is the number that ends most arguments. Under ANSI/KCMA A161.1 — the performance standard for kitchen and vanity cabinets, in use since 1965 — certified shelves and bottoms are loaded to 15 lb per square foot and held for seven days, while mounted wall cabinets and wall-hung base cabinets are loaded gradually to 600 lb without visible failure of the cabinet or the mounting system.
Now compare. A 100 lb square vessel basin on its own footprint works out to roughly 44 lb/ft², and a 36" wall-mount basin to about 70 lb/ft². Both are multiples of the 15 lb/ft² a certified shelf is validated for — and neither should ever land on a shelf or an unsupported cabinet deck. Both sit comfortably inside the 600 lb static figure for a properly mounted wall cabinet, provided the load reaches the wall structure rather than the cabinet skin.
Chuck Arnold, vice president of standards and certification at the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, notes that A161.1 test methods are "designed to simulate a lifetime of use" by a typical consumer. That is the point: these are everyday-use ratings, not a safe ceiling for a 300 lb block of stone. If your cabinet carries a KCMA seal, you know what it was tested to — and you know when you are outside that envelope.
Three support scenarios, three answers
1. Vessel basin on a vanity top
Easiest case. A 60–110 lb vessel spreads its load over the countertop, which spreads it over the cabinet frame. What matters is the countertop, not the sink: a 3 cm stone or solid-surface top on a full cabinet frame handles this without special measures. 2. Vanity-top or drop-in basin
At 250–320 lb, the fixture and countertop become one structural element. Support the top on a continuous rail or on cleats fixed into the cabinet's structural members — not into a decorative panel. Deep basins also shift the load forward of the cabinet centerline, which is where cantilever, not total weight, becomes the failure mode.
3. Wall-mounted basin
The demanding case, and the one worth engineering properly. A 300–400 lb basin hanging off a wall creates a bending moment at the fixings. Our standard specification: 2× solid blocking between studs (not drywall anchors, not toggle bolts), steel brackets lagged into that blocking, and the bracket arms sized to at least two-thirds of the basin's depth so the load transfers back rather than pulling out at the wall face. Why thickness is a strength question, not just a weight question
It is tempting to ask for thinner walls to save weight. The standards argue against it. ASTM C503 sets marble's minimum compressive strength at 7,500 psi (52 MPa) and both modulus of rupture and flexural strength at a minimum of 1,000 psi (7 MPa) — but those are material values measured on standard specimens. As any stone is cut thinner, its capacity in bending falls, and the ASTM soundness classification becomes decisive: only Soundness Group A marble is specified for applications that must bear weight or resist lateral loads without reinforcement.
This is why we carve basins from a single block at consistent wall thickness rather than assembling thin panels. If you want to reduce weight meaningfully, change the stone or the size — not the section.
What to check before you order
- Wall type. Wood-framed walls take blocking. Steel-stud and masonry walls need a different fixing schedule — tell us which you have.
- Finished weight, not shipping weight. Crating adds 40–80 lb. Ask for the fixture weight separately; it is the one your installer needs.
- Access route. A 350 lb basin needs two people and a clear path; stairs and tight landings change the plan.
- Cabinet certification. A KCMA A161.1 seal tells you the tested envelope. Without one, treat the load as unverified.
