Vessel formats range from crisp squares and soft ovals to deep-fluted statement pieces. Because the sink sits on the counter, installation is the simplest of all formats: one drain hole, standard plumbing, done. The stone itself is specified to ASTM C503/C503M, Table 1, Physical Requirements: marble absorbing no more than 0.20% water by weight, at a minimum density of 162 lb/ft³ for calcite marble, 7,500 psi compressive strength and 1,000 psi modulus of rupture. If you're pairing with an existing vanity, run the numbers first: the NKBA Bath Planning Guidelines (2022) ask for a clear 30 in. × 48 in. (762 mm × 1219 mm) floor space centred on the lavatory, with 21 in. (533 mm) in front as the code minimum. The same guidelines put workable lavatory height anywhere between 32 in. and 43 in. (813–1092 mm) to suit the user, while ICC A117.1-2009 clause 606.3 caps an accessible lavatory front at 34 in. (864 mm). Guideline 5 also asks for at least 4 in. (102 mm) between a wall and the edge of a freestanding or wall-hung basin, and 20 in. from the basin centreline to a sidewall. What sizes do marble vessel sinks come in?

Do vessel sinks need special faucets?

They pair with tall countertop faucets or wall-mounted spouts, and the figure that matters is the drop from spout outlet to basin floor. A WaterSense labeled bathroom faucet is capped at 1.5 gallons per minute at 60 psi against a 2.2 gpm U.S. federal maximum, with a 0.8 gpm minimum at 20 psi (U.S. EPA WaterSense, 2023). Above 1.5 gpm, or a drop over roughly 10 in., water starts reaching the wall. We confirm spout height against your chosen sink before carving.

Are your vessel sinks one solid piece?

Yes — every sink is carved from a single marble block. No seams, no glued panels, no composite. The stone is specified to ASTM C503/C503M, Table 1: marble absorbing no more than 0.20% water by weight, at a minimum 162 lb/ft³ density for calcite marble, 7,500 psi compressive strength and 1,000 psi modulus of rupture.

How high should the counter be for a vessel sink?

Aim for a counter 30–32 in. (76–81 cm) high. The NKBA Bath Planning Guidelines (2022) treat 32–43 in. (813–1092 mm) as the workable lavatory height range to suit the user, and ICC A117.1-2009 clause 606.3 caps an accessible lavatory front at 34 in. (864 mm) — so a vessel rim finishing around 34–36 in. suits most standing users but not an accessible layout. Standard 36-in. vanities usually need a lower counter or a shallower vessel.

Does a marble vessel sink need a backsplash?

Often, yes — a vessel sits above the counter, so the faucet is higher and the splash travels further than it does over an undermount bowl. Fit one if the basin sits within 4 in. (102 mm) of a wall, the spout drop exceeds roughly 10 in., or the wall behind is painted gypsum board. The Gypsum Association is direct about that last case: “In general, gypsum board should not be exposed to water for extended periods of time” (GA-231-2019, Assessing Water Damage to Gypsum Board), and the same document notes wetted board has to dry before mould growth begins, typically within 24 to 48 hours depending on environmental conditions — which a twice-daily splash cycle never allows.
