A stone sink is exactly what it sounds like — a basin carved from one piece of natural rock, not cast from resin or ceramic. At Marbly Design every stone sink starts as an Anatolian marble or travertine block and is handcarved to order, sealed, and shipped worldwide with duties paid.
Natural stone brings what no manufactured surface can: geological depth, honest texture and true uniqueness. The two stones also differ measurably. Under ASTM C503/C503M-15, marble dimension stone must reach a minimum density of 162 lb/ft³ (2,600 kg/m³) for Classification I calcite marble — 175 lb/ft³ (2,800 kg/m³) for dolomitic. ASTM C1527/C1527M sets travertine’s floor lower, at 144 lb/ft³ (2,300 kg/m³), with a maximum absorption of 2.5% by weight. In practice that means marble is denser and takes a higher polish, while travertine is lighter and more open-pored — which is exactly why we seal it before it leaves the workshop.

Which stone is best for a bathroom sink?
Marble for polish and dramatic veining; travertine for warm organic texture. Both perform beautifully when sealed — the choice is aesthetic.
Do stone sinks crack or leak?
No — carved from a single block, there are no seams to fail. What does cause failures is unsupported span, not the stone itself. Donato Pompo, founder of Ceramic Tile and Stone Consultants (CTaSC), summarised the industry guidance in 2024: “The Natural Stone Institute Dimension Stone Design Manual states that a 1.25″ thick stone can have a 3′ unsupported span between two supports… limited to a 10″ cantilever (overhanging) beyond the one sided support, but in no case more than 1/3 the width of the countertop.” Carved basins are supported across their full base, which is why they outlast the bathrooms around them.
How heavy is a stone sink?
Typically 15–35 kg (33–77 lbs) for standard formats. You can sanity-check any size yourself: solid volume × 162 lb/ft³ (the ASTM C503 minimum for calcite marble) or × 144 lb/ft³ for travertine. A 60 × 40 × 15 cm carved marble basin works out at roughly 28–32 kg (62–70 lbs) once the bowl is hollowed. Exact weight is listed on every product page, with bracket guidance for wall-mounted pieces.
Does a wall-mounted stone sink need extra support?
Yes. A 30 kg (66 lb) basin cantilevered off a wall puts its whole load on the fixings, not the stone. We specify blocking or a steel bracket rated well above the basin’s dead weight plus a full bowl of water — add about 8–12 kg (18–26 lbs) for the water.
